If you want to learn to shoot film, I highly recommend Jonathan Canlas’s new hardcover book, Film Is Not Dead. He explains everything so well and easily. It’s also a great refresher if you haven’t shot film in a long time. One of his best advice, that I totally agree with and take to heart, is to shoot lots of personal work. Lots. That’s how you learn and how you develop your style. Get the book, read it, and go out and shoot.

Miss Olive

I’m finally getting a chance to post on the blog again. Hopefully, I’ll be able to post a few times a month or more. We’re finally getting into a groove with Olive, especially in the evenings and I’m not always completely exhausted when it’s her bedtime. That’s a huge milestone.

I’ve been shooting more film with Olive, funny, but when I was documenting Emma’s life, it was all on film until she turned 8 years old. That’s when I got my first digital camera. I’m glad I’m shooting film again, this time for my second daughter and my own enjoyment, of course.

Here are a few images of Olive when she was 8 weeks. All shot on the Nikon F100 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Four bridges

That’s how many bridges I drove across to go visit friends this past Saturday. 4. Wow. I think that’s a record for me.

The morning started out at Diyosa’s new house. I was there to visit and to demonstrate the proper usage of the Chemex. Diyosa called me the door to door Chemex sales person. Haha. Nope, I was just sharing my knowledge of how to correctly brew with the Chemex and she did admit the coffee tasted better then when she tried brewing it herself the first time. We had a great time noshing and just being us. Good times.

Then I was off to visit my friend Karen and her family in their new home. Which is lovely and charming. They treated me like a queen and fed me quite well. Thanks you guys! It was fun to just sit around and catch up, follow the Giants game a bit and take some photos right before the magic hour light.

Below are photos of the day. I only took one photo at Diyosa’s, not sure why I didn’t take more. Maybe cuz I was waiting for the coffee to kick in. The rest are from my visit with Karen.

These are our favorite beans, from Blue Bottle Coffee in the Mint Plaza. Of course, we always use the Chemex to brew our coffee, it takes longer but so worth the wait.

Planet Olive

I have not had an official Maternity Session, yet. The documentation of Planet Olive has been sporadic, but these are my favorite images by far. One Sunday morning, when we weren’t booked for portrait sessions, or anything else for that matter (rare indeed), Seth took these with my Hasselblad 500CM and a Polaroid Back. It was still early morning and the light coming in our bedroom windows were quite ideal, especially for the 100 ISO film, which can be finicky at times. We had other cameras to shoot with, but someone (me) forgot to load the film. Haha. My bad.

I will have my official Maternity Session, though not until mid September, by Ashley McNamara. We’re doing a trade. She shoots my belly and I shoot her family. Fair trade, I say.
